Our House Teen Room
Project
Sector
The teen room at the homeless shelter’s children center is designed for children ages twelve to seventeen, so it was imperative that the space be “cool and lounge-like.”
The room’s furniture is more suited to teens and includes areas for homework, reading, and relaxation, much like they could find in a corner bistro or cool library.
Oversized beanbags and ottomans, along with a bold and energetic aesthetic, allows flexibility for a casual setting but also grounded enough to provide a learning atmosphere. Bright hues of blue, green, and orange mix with bright whites and soft wood tones to further create the hip lounge teen retreat. This space needed to feel like a cool place to hang out. Most of the kids that use this space do not have their own home, let alone a swanky living room or lounge. So, the director wanted this space to be enticing for the teens to want to spend time after school and during summer break to encourage learning, community, and prevent opportunities for poor behavior outside of the property.
